A Message to Our Customers

Over the course of the past few months, we at ABC have been focused on putting systems and programs into place to support our mission of helping people with disabilities lead healthier, more active, more confident lives by:

  • Encouraging and helping fund their athletic participation, nationally and locally
  • Carrying a comprehensive product line that places their needs ahead of our profits
  • Providing options and education to help reduce their incidence of infection
  • Offering innovative opportunities for part- and full-time employment

Transitioning to new systems and programs is never easy, and we have had to Adapt daily.  We Believe our mission and investment in new programs will be meaningless without our continued focus and commitment to exceptional customer service.  It is our goal to exceed our customers' expectations, and we will not rest until every customer is satisfied.  To that end, please feel free to share your comments and suggestions on how we can improve our service, products, and programs at any time.  We will Compete to win your business every day.

Warm regards,

Keith W. Jones

Announcements

ABC and NWBA enter new partnership

ABC is excited to renew its partnership with the NWBA. The NWBA and ABC Medical have had a long and mutually beneficial partnership for many years, and we wanted to continue this relationship while pursuing additional opportunities to grow and develop together. As ABC continues to demonstrate its leadership in empowering the disabled community to become involved with adaptive sports as an integral part of their achievement to "Adapt. Believe. Compete." and rise above life's toughest challenges, it will provide its support to the NWBA and its members in its operations and endeavors.

ABC and NWSA enter new partnership

The National Wheelchair Softball Association and ABC Medical entered a new partnership.  As the exclusive medical supply sponsor to the NWSA, ABC will also be an official sponsor of the National Wheelchair Softball Tournament each year.  This year, the National Tournament is to be held in Chicago, IL, on August 16-18, 2012.  Members of ABC's team, including many ABC Advocates in the Chicago area, will be in attendance, so if you are in the area, feel free to stop by and say hello.  ABC is excited to embark on this new partnership and looks forward to helping the NWSA in many ways as the partnership develops.

ABC launches ABC Advocate program

ABC launched its revolutionary, nation-wide ABC Advocate program in July.  Our program is unique and provides a great opportunity for individuals to earn an income on their own time marketing ABC's goods and services.  The position as an ABC Advocate is a part-time position, with the opportunity for a full-time position. Income is based 100% on commissions earned, with no sales quotas to worry about. How much you earn is entirely up to you! In addition to your earnings, ABC will set aside a percentage of its profits to the charity of your choice--to help fund your own adaptive sports team or any other charitable organization you designate. The position requires no special expertise other than a passion to succeed, and we provide all the product training, educational support, and marketing materials you need.

To learn more about this unique opportunity, call ABC at 888-231-7967 or email ABCadvocate@abc-med.com or visit www.abc-med.com. Let us help you decide if this exceptional opportunity to do well, while doing good, is right for you!

 Travel Tips

Friendly Vacation Spots

Summer is here!  Why not head to beautiful San Diego in Southern California?  With an average temperature of 70 degrees, San Diego is the perfect spot to visit!  Enjoy places like the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Safari Park and Sea World, or take a cruise around the Harbor to catch a glimpse of whales.  San Diego offers a wide variety of activities, no matter your personal preference, and it's located only an hour and a half away from "the most magical place on Earth"...Disneyland!

The city is also extremely accessible to the physically disabled community.  Find hotels and activities that are accessible using sites like AccessibleSanDiego.  This site provides an in-depth guide to the city; it provides a list of hotels with handicap accessibility, with information on what features the hotel rooms offer and how many of these accessible rooms are available.

Health Tip of the Month

How to Catheterize

Each month, we ask our resident RN and Director of Sales and Clinical Strategy, Dawn Forrest, RN, BSN, CLNC, for a helpful tip for those living with a physical disability.

Just like any other skill, using a catheter can be difficult at first, but will get easier with practice.  A catheter is a small tube that is used to drain urine from your bladder when you are unable to do so on your own.  Before you begin, try to urinate, if you are able to on your own.  Your supplies should be easy to reach and ready to use.  Wash your hands thoroughly, as germs from your hands can get onto the catheter and into your urinary tract and cause infection.

For men:  With clean and gloved hands, begin cleaning the head of your penis with gentle soap or the swab provided in your insertion kit.  Begin cleaning at the opening of the urethra and move outwards. Do not touch the catheter or the tip of your penis if you have touched anything else, including your clothing or other body parts, as this can cause infection.  Before inserting the catheter, hold your penis up and towards your body.  Gently squeeze the head of your penis to open the urethra.  Slowly and carefully insert the catheter into your urethra.  You may feel some resistance, but continue to gently push the catheter in until urine begins to flow.  Once this occurs, insert the catheter another inch or so.  After the urine stops flowing, move around a little to ensure that all urine has left the bladder.  Slowly remove the catheter, stopping at any point urine begins to flow again.  When you are done, throw out the used catheter and gloves and wash your hands.

For women:  With clean and gloved hands, separate your labia and clean the entire area, especially the area surrounding the opening to the urethra, from front to back, using gentle soap or the swab provided in your insertion kit.  Do not touch the catheter or the opening to your urethra if you have touched anything else, including your clothing or other body parts, as this can cause infection.  Keep the labia separated and insert the catheter very slowly and carefully.  Using a leg mirror will make it much easier to see what you are doing.  Continue to insert the catheter until urine begins to flow.  Once this occurs, insert the catheter another inch or so. After the urine stops flowing, move around a little to ensure that all urine has left the bladder. Slowly remove the catheter, stopping at any point urine begins to flow again. When you are done, throw out the used catheter and gloves and wash your hands.
