If you live with urinary incontinence, skin care should be a major part of your self-care routine. What starts as an annoying rash can quickly turn into an uncomfortable and potentially serious case of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD).
IAD happens when the ammonia from urine leakage changes the pH (acid) levels in the fragile skin of the perineum—the area between the anus and genitals. IAD breaks down the protective layers of your skin, leading to tiny cracks and fissures that can become inflamed, irritated or infected.
Friction is also a factor. Clothing, harsh wiping or inadequate absorbent pads can make the problem worse. You'll know IAD is flaring up if you have:
- Itching
- Burning
- Blisters
- Rash
- Rough skin patches
Cleansing Products
Eliminating IAD starts with keeping the skin as clean as possible—gently. Wiping alone isn’t always enough, and ordinary soaps and body wipes can alter the pH levels in your skin even more.
There are several kinds of gentle and effective cleansers on the market: foams, sprays and lotions, to name a few. Many manufacturers also offer pre-treated wipes that require no water or rinsing—perfect to carry wherever you go.
When you’re choosing a cleanser, look for a product with a pH level of 4-6, which is close to healthy skin. Use it after every episode of incontinence, then pat the skin dry.
Creams, Ointments and Barrier Films
In addition to keeping the perineal area clean, add a skin protectant for an extra layer of preventative comfort. These products place a soothing layer between your skin and urinary irritants by keeping moisture out and reducing friction.
You’ll see one or more of these ingredients in an effective incontinence cream:
- Zinc oxide
- Dimethicone
- Lanolin
- Petrolatum
Barrier films create an invisible, long-lasting barrier that’s impermeable, breathable and flexible. This breakthrough product uses acrylate-based polymers that safely adhere to damaged skin. The film is packaged as a single-use applicator sponge, an aerosol or pump spray or disposable wipes. It doesn’t sting, it can’t be wiped away easily and one application can last for several days.
