After a spinal cord injury (SCI), transitioning to life at home after hospitalization and rehab care means learning a whole new set of skills. It also involves discovering where to find the resources and support that can help you feel confident and in control of your own life and journey.
Fortunately, there are helpful programs across the US that provide practical help and resources for individuals with spinal cord injuries. One such program is Navigator by ABC MedicalSM services, a free service to ABC Medical customers, providing personalized support to individuals living with an SCI and their caregivers, as well as customers with spina bifida or traumatic/acute brain injury.
Each Navigator has extensive training and personal expertise to guide you through challenges such as:
- Insurance and benefits
- Wheelchair procurement
- Transportation
- Home modifications
- Work accommodations
Alton’s Story
Alton, who experienced a T3 spinal injury, needed help with legal and housing challenges as he cared for his young daughter. With one-on-one guidance from a Navigator Specialist, Alton was able to move into a wheelchair-accessible home—a change that transformed his life.
Has the Navigator experience changed your day-to-day life?
I couldn't get out of bed - that's not the way you should live. That's not life, that's not living. I feel independent now. I can get in the shower, I can make my own food, I can take out the trash, I can hang up my clothes, I can clean my house. It feels good not needing anyone.
How else has the Navigator Program impacted your care?
My Navigator Specialist was the light! She helped me with everything. It is real support. Everybody needs a friend and a real shoulder to lean on. I am a better me. The program made me a better me mentally and emotionally. I feel whole again. I am a lot stronger than what I was. I can be the best daddy to my daughter.
How would you describe Navigator to someone unfamiliar with the program?
If you think you are by yourself and can't count on anyone, and you really need someone else, you need to reach out to Navigator.
If you had just 3 words to describe the one-on-one support, what would they be?
Family. Home. Friend.
