If you are an active wheelchair user, you are probably aware of the risks of getting a shoulder injury and potentially a surgery. It is almost more common to have a shoulder surgery among athletes than not these days. Even pushing your chair on a regular day to get around puts pressure on your shoulders. If you add vigorous exercise where you try to push harder and faster, it adds a significant density on shoulders. You need to take good care of your shoulders and have a balanced work out method, in which you work not only your big muscles in your shoulder gridle, but also the smaller ones.

As Team USA is finishing up its final round of training before heading down to Rio at the end of August, we are excited to present the U.S. Paralympic Men's and Women’s wheelchair basketball interviews to shed some light into the lives of some of the most incredible athletes and coaches in the world.

Alabama Wheelchair Basketball Camp, Athlete Spotlight- Wyatt Johnson

Wyatt Johnson is one of the 4 wheelchair basketball athletes, who was recently selected to receive an ABC Medical scholarship  to attend the Alabama Wheelchair Basketball Camp in Tuscaloosa, AL  this weekend, July 7-10, 2016.  Over 40 junior wheelchair athletes, between the ages 12-19 are expected to attend the 3-day long summer camp in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama's Recreation Center this weekend. Camp coaches include Ford Burttram, Alabama Men's Head Coach, Margaret Stran, Associate Director and former Team USA athlete, Adam Lancia, Alabama Women's Head Coach and current member of Team Canada, and Adam Kramer,  Alabama Women's Assistant Coach.

In his application essay, Wyatt Johnson expressed his "love" for wheelchair basketball. "Hopefully one day, I'll be great at it-  What better place to learn to be great in wheelchair basketball, other than Alabama!" Wyatt has been playing wheelchair basketball since he was 7 years old.  He started at Lakeshore Foundation, in Birmingham and played with their prep team, the Sharks. In the summer of 2015, during the Para Pan American Games in Toronto, a young athlete on Team USA caught our attention with his success in wheelchair racing. As we followed his athletic journey closer, we found out that he also played wheelchair basketball with the Para Spokane Jr. Team and traveled to Louisville for the NWBA Nationals. We were convinced this young athlete had a bright future ahead of him. We reached out to his family to learn more about his journey toward becoming the great athlete he is today. We are excited to share the story of Spencer Kimbro.
